Layered Food

Dududu....! let’s play with layered cakes. These photos are the example of layered cakes. Honestly, I didn’t make that cake by my self, but I bought it done. I bought 4 packs of soft cakes, they are all different flavor, products, and color.

The bottom one is pandanus flavor. Bottom two, is chocolate flavor. On third layer, is cheese flavor, and the top one is black chocolate flavor. I bought them in a mini market, very instant... hahah... To beautified the food, I drizzled coffee powder around the plate. It makes the picture more vivid I think.
When we could choose layered concept? I think the answer is, when the object, in here is food, has layers to show the delish. Like a slice of layered cake, we shoot it from 0 degree angle to show viewers the layers. Food photographer must know what is the key of the delicious from the food.
I think layered cake look so delicious if we shoot the layers, it will show us the components, the structure, texture and surface of the cake. But it doesn’t matter if you want to shoot layered cake from bird’s aye angle, it’s not a sin anyway. This one could be the example.

I used layered concept in another photo. These wafers are the example. Actually my boy, Angger, taught me and gave me this idea. I didn’t find a good angle before. I shot the wafers from bird’s eye angle but actually that was not a brilliant picture. Then he gave me an idea to stack the wafers. And here they are. The picture looks nice in layered concept. Don’t stack it straight up, but make it lil’ messy. I think it’s better. Say thanks to my boo, Angger. J

How to Get Back Your Spirit

Last week I felt I lost my spirit to do my hobby, food photography. I didn’t know why but I felt so heavy to work with my camera and my foods. I discussed to my boy and order a solution of my problem.
I actually disappointed with my photos, they are look not so brilliant, they are look very bad in my opinion. I thought I was not suitable in food photography and unable, never be able to be a professional food photographer. I looked all of my pictures in my laptop. Nothing good for me. I thought I didn’t have any talent in photography.
But I was wrong. Angger told me that every photographer ever feels the same thing like me. They reach the success from efforts they did before. The way is not feasible even very hard to passed. They ever felt when their pictures were insulted by people. They were nothing without efforts.
Success requires totality, sacrifices, and efforts. You must understand that the path to obtain success is not easy to passed. There must be very vast painful experiences while you passing the path. You have to learn more from your painful experiences.
So, to get back your spirit, maybe you can do these things:
  1. Do not be disappointed while your photos were insulted by people. Try to do the best.
  2. Accept advantages critics from the experts. Then do your work like their suggestions.
  3. Believe that success requires totality, sacrifices, and efforts. From your painful experiences, you could learn to be better and better.
  4. Believe that all you have done with sacrifices will bring you to a big success. There are no success stories without painful and excruciate experiences behind.
  5. Ignore the creature who not support you to do your hobby.
  6. Be patience. It will take a long time to reach the success. Don’t be hurried it will make you become an unorganized person. Believe that success needs a long time and a long process.
  7. Be genuine with your creation. There is no deceit in your dictionary.
  8. Believe in what you have, and your talent. Step by step, from newbie you can be a professional.

Play with Small and Colorful Candies

It’s awesome to play with colorful candies. Look at this photo. I put them in a white bowl, (its shapes such as an ashtray…) and added a magazine that shows us a big word: “SWEET”. Why did I choose this page? Actually I want to describe that the candies are sweet. So I opened that page and made them as the background. Why did I choose white bowl? Because the candies were very colorful so we took the white one to balance the color.

One Food, Double Concepts

Don’t worry if you just have one food, you can make any concepts from just one food. For example, these are my photos. I had a pack of cookies and I used two concepts for this time. One, the cookies in the afternoon, and another one the cookies in the morning.
How about the property? Can we use it twice or more? The answer is, absolutely you can! These photos are the examples. I used a bottle of beer named Bisquit as the background in donut picture. And I used a bottle of beer named Baileys  as the point of interest in another picture. Actually, the both of that beer bottle are different, but they are still beer bottles. They are same. So, don’t be hesitate to use your properties twice or more, just take it with differences angle or concepts.

Relies on Natural Light

If you don’t have any flash lamp or you just don’t understand how to set the light, just rely on natural light from sun. Me, as a newbie in photography, I’m not good at setting the light so I rely on natural light though. But next time I will try to learn about setting the light using flash and reflector.
You must know the mood of light if you wanna use natural light. Sometimes it’s cloudy, or even very bright in the afternoon. Let’s see these examples.

I shot the honey nut photo around 9 am, while the sun shine bright enough, but still soft and smooth. And the cookies one, I shot them around 11.30 am, while the light from sun too harsh. Can you see the differences between these photos?
The honey nut, looks more dramatic and soft lightning and the cookies one looks more pale (besides, the napkin I used has a pale color). Actually there are many solutions for this problem. You can use a reflector and a study lamp. But our topic is, just rely on natural light.
From that examples, I recommend to take a photo in the morning if you just rely on natural light. But if the weather is cloudy, just heighten your ISO on your camera. You can choose winter concept if the weather is cloudy.

How to make Your Own Studio

Some of you maybe has a same hobby like me, shoot the food. But, to realize that hoby, you must have a studio. How can if we have no money to build our own studio?
I have read very vast sources about the little studio. Don’t worry, you can make your own! It’s easy to do because the requirements are easy to obtained.
Just choose a corner in your house that have a wide window so the natural light will come over. Pick a table that high same as the window. Now you have your own studio. And how about the properties? Take over look to your kitchen, find some pretty kitchen stuffs like white plate, wine glasses, shiny spoon, colorful napkins, etc. You can add some patterned paper or colorful paper if you want to use it as the background.
Now you must set the light. You can use a study lamp as the light source. For the reflector, you can use alumunium surface. But if you have enough money, it’s good if you buy a flash, tripod, and photo studio umbrella.
In my studio, I will use a flash from Canon 430ex II , actually it’s my boy’s stuff. (he is a photographer anyway) and a tripod. I use a bedroom in my boy’s house as my fake studio, I called it. Heheh…
If you want to be a professional one, just buy some soft box lamps, snoot, reflector, and etc to support your work. But for me, as a newbie, try a simple studio and make your own studio at your home though. Heheh…

My First Food Picture

That is my first picture and from here I have been falling in love with food photography. I captured that while I was in Jakarta, my hometown. If i come back to Jakarta, I will always try to cook with my mom then I shot the food.
For example that macaroni schotel, I made it together with my mom and after that I suddenly created my fake studio in my terrace. It was exaclty 8 am, I ran to my bedroom, I picked up my dolls, then brought them all to my terrace. They became the background. Can you see the dolls behind the schotel??? Yes, they are...
From this suddenly photo shot, I wonder how enchanting food photography is. I decided to learn more about food photography, I bought some books, I discussed with my friends, and now here I am...
Food photography was born with passion in my self, I love it because I find the joyful here. How about you guys?

On the Spot Photo

The begining I entered this awesome world, I mean food photography, I didn’t understand anything about the lighting, studio, properties, concept, etc. In my head, food photography is about ‘just shoot the food’.
I had no one as a person for me to ask about this hobby. I just played with my camera, I brought it everywhere like a dump person. Hahah... Everytime I ate in a good restaurant, I always brought my camera then shot the food without consider the condition, the lighting, moreover the properties. In that time, I just shot.
Here is one of my on-the-spot food picture. This is chicken katsu, Japanese food exactly. It’s crunchy, tasty, and absolutely delicious. I love this Japanese Food!  It served in a bento box, that also contained  rice, salad, and chilli sauce.
how about you guys?

The photo looks yellowish because the lamp in the restaurant is tungsten. There is no property addition and concept prepared.
But now, I know that food photography could be prepared before you shoot. You must set the light, prepare the properties, and make a concept that suitable to your food. It’s very hard for me to do an on-the-spot photo because we can not set anything in the restaurant. So I don’t recomend you to do the same thing like I did... Trust me, it’s hard to beautify your picture. Except, you had any contract permission with the restaurant officer.
